On May 5,
2007 Camp Orchard Hill gathered together staff members from 30 years of
summer camp for a day of memories. If you have any camping experience,
you know that this is a unique set of poeple with a unique set of
memories. They have learned to love chicken nuggets. They have grown
accustomed to dirty camp feet. they have probably spent time in Lake
Manjo and they can see the skit potential in a clown costume and a jar
of peanut butter. Whether they worked in 1977 or 2007, this group of
COH alumni found plenty of common ground.
Alumni were able to tour the camp and experience the changes that have been made through the years, including the gymnasium, the climbing wall and the air-conditioned cabins. But many also enjoyed walking with their families around the grounds and sharing the familiar sites that make COH feel like home. Families gathered on the second floor of the gymnasium for a time of worship, classic camp songs, skits and sharing. One by one former staff members spoke of the way they were transformed by their time at COH. A slideshow and tables of photo albums revealed decades of unfortunate hairstyles and fashion, and a mix of generations performed a stirring rendition of "If I were Not a Counselor." The day wrapped up with a banquet for the adults and s/mores around the campfire. What could be better?
